East Mississippi Community College’s Voices of Victory choir has had a successful year, scheduling numerous performances at churches, events in the district, and hosting several other events, including their show for Black History Month in February. The choir is a student-led organization, starting over a decade ago by EMCC students on the Scooba campus.
Choir advisors are EMCC Associate Dean of Students LaPari Morant and Athletic Director
Administrative Assistant Nakisha Woods, who both have additional duties. Student choir
leaders include Nevaeh Moore, president; James Trimuel, vice president; and Deontay
Thompson, secretary.
“It helps bring unity and more Christianity to our community as well,” Moore said of the choir. “Scooba is a small town, so we try our best to impact other students and peers to come together with God.”
The choir hosts choral concerts both at EMCC and in the community. Trimuel described the events as cathartic.
Members of the choir and EMCC students who attend the events, as well as those who have invited them to perform, sing their praises and describe their events as cathartic.
“You get to be a part of a community of people who want to push the same thing as you,” Trimuel said. “We want to lift up God and encourage people because college can be challenging and sometimes you need something that will uplift you.”
“Being a part of Voices of Victory has cultivated me and the leader in me,” Thompson said. “My favorite event has been the Black History Month program, where souls were being saved and deliverance took place.”
Thompson said he is looking forward to the choir's revival at the end of March.
For the second year in a row, the choir has been nominated for a Golden Triangle Area Music Award for College Choir of the Year. The award show will be held on Saturday, March 21, in Philadelphia. Choir members are looking forward to more upcoming events including a revival on March 25 in the Stennis Auditorium and a performance at a Mississippi State University Black Voices event in April.
Voices of Victory is actively recruiting EMCC student members for the fall semester. Students can speak with choir members or email emccvov@gmail.com for more information.
