Eleven students enrolled in East Mississippi Community College’s Business and Marketing Management Technology program on the college’s Scooba campus toured the nation’s capital and the Big Apple March 17-21.
In Washington D.C., the students toured national monuments and spoke with federal officials about pending legislation and possible internships with the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate.
The students met with Mississippi’s Congressional delegates in their respective office at the U.S. Capitol building, including those of Sen. Roger Wicker, Sen. Cindy Hyde Smith, Rep. Bennie Thompson, Rep. Trent Kelly, Rep. Michael Guest and Rep. Mike Ezell.
“Many of the students had never flown on a plane, road a ferry boat, subway or train,”
Business and Marketing Management Technology instructor Dr. Joshua Carroll said. “Trips
like this provide invaluable learning experiences that can’t be found inside a classroom.”
While meeting with Mississippi’s U.S. Congressional leaders, the students discussed legislation such as the Workforce Pell Grant program or Short-Term Pell.
While in Washington, the students visited the nation’s monuments, including the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the National World War I and II Memorials and the Arlington National Cemetery. They also visited the Museum of the Bible and attended a Washington Wizards NBA game.
“Trips like these are an important means of exposing students to real-world experiences that can’t be learned in a classroom,” Marketing Technology instructor Dr. Joshua Carroll said.
While in New York City, the students visited Times Square, the New York Stock Exchange, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the Hard Rock Café and Madison Square Gardens. They also saw the Charging Bull, or Bull of Wall Street, bronze sculpture.
Students in the Business and Marketing Management Technology program who took part in the trip are Tarlaysia Butler, Jermichael Hooks, Ricjavious Ervin, Jeilyn Arterberry, Skyla Collier, Rawson Tiller, Jermane Jackson, Jayden Fox, Madison Moody, Jaqueria Esters and Demerror Brown.
