Surgical Technology
Surgical Technology is an instructional program that prepares an individual to serve
as a member of the surgical team to work with surgeons, anesthesiologists, certified
registered nurse anesthetists, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel in
delivering patient care and assuming appropriate responsibilities before, during,
and after surgery. This program includes the education of all aspects of surgical
technology including the role of second assistant and circulator.
The Associate of Applied Science degree for Surgical Technology is a 68-hour program.
The program consists of a minimum of 23 hours of general academic classes and 45 hours
of ST classes. Students must take all SUT classes in sequential order. An Associate
of Applied Science Degree in Surgical Technology will be awarded to the successful
graduate of the 12-month program.
The EMCC Surgical Technology Program currently runs from January to December as a
12-month program. Applications open up on August 1 and close October 1. On August
1, the updated Surgical Technology Admission Packet will be available under the “Application
Process” tab.
Applicant must have:
- A minimum composite score of 16 with sub score of 16 in reading on the ACT.
- For any previous college work attempted accumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0
scale.
Please note: Due to the nature of the program, admission is competitive and enrollment
is limited. Students are chosen without regard to sex, age (must be at least 18 years
of age), race, creed, ethnic origin, or marital status. A point system is used to
determine which students are admitted into the program. This point system is explained
in the Surgical Technology Admission Packet.
There are not any prerequisite classes HOWEVER this program is an Associate of Applied
Science Degree. To graduate from this program all GENERAL EDUCATION CORE REQUIREMENTS
classes must be completed by the December graduation date. These classes can be completed
during the Surgical Technology Program however it is highly recommended you have as
many of those GENERAL EDUCATION CORE REQUIREMENTS completed as possible if not all
complete due to the rigorous nature of the program. The GENERAL EDUCATION CORE REQUIREMENTS
are listed under the Curriculum tab below.
Career Opportunities

The Surgical Technology program prepares graduates with entry-level knowledge to enter
into the workforce as an entry-level surgical technologist, traveling surgical technologist,
labor and delivery technician and central sterile supply technician.

1. If you have not applied for admission to EMCC within the last 12 months, go to
http://www.eastms.edu/and select the “Apply Now!” link to submit an online application for admission to
East Mississippi Community College. Acceptance to East Mississippi Community College does not guarantee acceptance to
the Surgical Technology program. Letters of pending acceptance will come from the Director
of Nursing and Health Sciences.2. In addition to completing the EMCC application, prospective participants must also

This program requires each applicant must have a minimum composite score of 16 with
sub score of 16 in Reading on the ACT. For any previous college work attempted, a
cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale must have been achieved. The applicant
is responsible for ensuring that the data in the file is received, correct and complete.

Certifications

The Surgical Technology program curriculum is designed for graduates to become nationally
certified though the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting
(NBSTSA) upon successfully passing the national exam.
