Welding

Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) is offered at four progressing levels.  All welding classes are 32 hours of training. Training is available on the Golden Triangle and Scooba campuses, as well as Macon and West Point labs. Individuals must provide their own personal safety equipment: Welding Shield, Leather Gloves, Safety Glasses and Welding Sleeves.

Students must complete the WorkKeys assessment at a minimum of a Bronze level to participate in this course on the Golden Triangle Campus.

Shielded Metal Arc Welding Basic
Individuals enter the class and are introduced to safety in the welding lab, welding equipment, welding rods and materials.  Individuals begin welding and work towards the completion of a horizontal and vertical T-joint.

Shielded Metal Arc Welding Intermediate
Prerequisite: Completion of Basic SMAW.  Individuals are introduced to V groove welds with a backing plate.  Individuals begin welding and work towards the completion of a beveled plate with backing strip horizontal and a beveled plate with backing strip vertical up weld.  A destructive bend test is used to verify weld integrity.

Shielded Metal Arc Welding Advanced
Prerequisite: Completion of Intermediate SMAW.  Individuals are introduced to open root V groove welds.  Individuals begin welding and work towards the completion of a beveled plate with an open root horizontal and a beveled plate with an open root vertical up weld.  A destructive bend test is used to verify weld integrity.

Shielded Metal Arc Welding Pipe
Prerequisite: Completion of Advanced SMAW.  Individuals are introduced to pipe welding in multiple positions.  Individuals begin welding and work towards the completion of a Beveled pipe open root weld in the 6G position.  A destructive bend test is used to verify weld integrity.

Pipefitting

Prerequisite: Completion of Advanced SMAW or work equivilent. Individuals will enchance skills and abilities in the pipefitting skills disciplines to facilitate retention of jobs, new job opportunities and/or advancement. Individuals will fit pipe in sizes from 3/4" to 6", with various joint configurations and equipment, threading and tact welding and grinding saddles and pipe alignment.

Other types of welding classes are held on occasion as demand requires. FCAW (Flux Core Arc Welding), GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding)
