Laid off, father of three, one on the way ...One Friday afternoon in spring 2011, Paul Baucom graduated from EMCC with an associate's degree in Automotive Services Technology. On Monday, he started a full-time job at Carl Hogan Chevrolet. "I will continue my job with Carl Hogan, and get more training with ASE certification through GMC," Paul said. Why EMCC? I'm connecting my past to my future ...Todd Eck of Sturgis is studying Drafting & Design at EMCC. "I started to think about my education when the housing market started to collapse a few years ago. I became unemployed after being in this business for 20 years," Todd said. "I chose the Drafting and Design field because of the close parallel to the work I had been doing for most of my life." Gulf War veteran making the transition ...Mark Minor graduated from EMCC in spring 2011 with an associate's degree in Computer Networking Technology. "When I retired from the Navy and moved back to Mississippi, I was looking for a college that would offer me the training and education I was looking for, but would also provide that small college atmosphere – since it had been years since I had been in a classroom environment." Why EMCC? Family first, college second ... that was the planCandace Sanders of Starkville is a spring 2011 graduate of EMCC. "I’ve been married for eight years and we have three beautiful children," Candace said. "I’ve known from a very young age that I wanted to be a high school math teacher. I just decided to start a family before I finished my degree." Why EMCC? The company where I worked closed ...Bettye Foote of Brooksville is studying Health Care Data Technology, part of EMCC's Business Office Technology program. "I decided to go back to school after my job closed down," Bettye said. "I’ve always wanted to go back to school, but never had the time or the opportunity to do so. So I guess that makes me a non-traditional student." Why EMCC? I wanted to turn my life around ...Andy Ford of Millport, Ala., is a spring 2011 graduate of EMCC's Electrical Technology program. "By age 16, I dropped out of school and began working. Like many young men, I thought I had all the answers," Ford said. "I turned my life around. In this story, she looks back at what brought her to Lion Country and what's next. And, she offers this piece of advice for future students: "GO TO CLASS! It pays off. I understand you will get sick or might play ball, but other than that, go to class. If you do that and most of your homework, you will be fine." Why EMCC? The paper mill closed ...Daran Stone graduated from EMCC in spring 2012 with two Associate of Science degrees and an Associate of Arts degree. He decided to go back to school when Domtar closed and he lost his job. "I needed to improve my skills, so I would be more diversified and have more options," Stone said. "Obviously, I want to find a good job with a stable company." Heard it one too many times ... "You didn't go to college"Beverly Hardin of Macon graduated with highest honors from EMCC in spring 2012, earning a vocational certificate in the Health Care Assistant program. "I watched gifted family members drop out of school, and I tried to talk them into staying in school and going to college. I got this answer every time, 'You didn’t go to college.' So, that was my motivation." Why EMCC? My roommate told me about it!Greg Guy is a spring 2012 graduate of EMCC's forestry program. "I love the outdoors and anything to do with the outdoors," he said.
