How I got here:
My name is Lucy Sandifer, and I am 15 years old. I live in Caledonia with my dad, mom and four siblings. I enjoy hanging out with my friends and family, playing volleyball and tending to our dog, cat, and chickens. My family and I attend Fairview Baptist Church. I enjoy playing the violin in the Suzuki Orchestra and the Starkville Symphony. We play with our brother as a string trio at nursing homes several times each year. I also serve on the Student Council of the local home-school group, CHELC. This year I started dual-enrolling as a high school senior at East Mississippi Community College. EMCC is very conveniently located at Columbus Air Force Base, where my dad is a pilot instructor. My sister and I ride with him every Tuesday and Thursday morning to our classes.
What I’ve accomplished:
Dual-enrolling is giving me the opportunity to attend class outside of home before attending college full-time. The teachers at EMCC are great. Mrs. Seals makes algebra fun and easy to understand. Mrs. Locke likes what she does, which makes her easy to listen to. The homework is challenging, but the teachers are willing to spend time with us individually to help us understand.
I plan to go into nursing, veterinary medicine or music. I’ve always loved working with and learning about animals. I’m not sure exactly what direction I’m going to take, but for now, I’ll just complete my prerequisites. One day I’d like to stay home and teach my own children. Focusing on my education now will prepare me for that goal.
For EMCC students, I would recommend taking good notes during lectures, working hard on homework and asking the teachers for help. Napping before arriving in class, as opposed to during lectures, is also helpful.
What her instructor, Patricia Locke, says:
Lucy Sandifer is extremely well-rounded and is accepting college challenges at the age of only 15! A dual-enrolled student, Lucy has yet to graduate high school and will cross that threshold in May 2012. It has been my privilege to teach Lucy, for she is outgoing, polite, assured and intelligent. Although she is not the age of her classmates, Lucy does not show this fact in her participation in class, where she is very active and sets an example for others to follow.
In academic year 2013-14, Lucy Sandifer is a full-time academic student at East Mississippi Community College.
