I am 40 years old and married with four children, ranging in age from 1 to 21. I never thought about going back to college until I was laid off in December 2008. My wife was three months pregnant and I could not find a job. My case worker at the WIN Job Center suggested that I go back to college. After a long discussion with my family, that is what I decided to do.
What I’m doing:
I decided to major in Automotive Services Technology since it was something I had experience in. After talking with the instructors, Mr. Dale Henry and Mr. Grady Graham, I knew it was the right thing to do. The education I have received has been wonderful. I never knew how much more there was out there to learn. Thanks to this great college and wonderful instructors, I was able to get an internship at Carl Hogan Chevrolet. Thanks to the education I have received, I have already moved into a service technician position with a guaranteed full‐time job after graduation.
I will continue my job with Carl Hogan, get more training with ASE certification through GMC, and learn and train with my job.
My advice: Do not come into this program thinking you know everything. There is always more to learn … and ask questions!
His instructor, Grady Graham, says:
Paul is very quiet, but as classes moved along, he began to bloom like a flower. He enrolled in Work‐based Learning and progressed from part‐time employee to full‐time employee at Carl Hogan Chevrolet Inc. in Columbus. Paul has really worked hard to get where he is today. He has been a real pleasure to teach him and watch him grow. He is one of those students you really want to see go all the way in his chosen career.
