  • Scholarships available: EMCC Mighty Lion Band auditions

Positions are still available for students interested in trying out for EMCC's Mighty Lion Band. Auditions will continue as long as scholarships are available, but they need to take place before summer band camps July 27-Aug. 1 and Aug. 7-11. Band Director Steve Stringer: “The time to try out is now. There are a limited number of scholarships.”

  • 50-year-old mother pursues dream at EMCC's Lion Hills Center

Fifty-year-old Betty Hoskins of Aliceville, Ala., reached a turning point in her life last year. Her four children were grown. They had left home and were raising families of their own. Next year, Hoskins will graduate with an associate's degree in Hotel & Restaurant Management from EMCC's Lion Hills Center and hopes to find a job in the hotel industry in Columbus.

  • Overseas tour a learning experience for student, instructor

After a 10-day trip to Ireland, Wales and England, EMCC Honors Forum instructor Louise Mullins touted the benefits overseas educational tours provide to students: “Seeing all of the places they read about makes history come alive for them.” Mullins was accompanied on the tour by EMCC Honors Forum student Mallory Vance, a sophomore from Collinsville. The two joined a group of 30 people from Mountain Empire Community College in Big Stone Gap, Va.

  • Room to grow: New Student Union to open during the fall

The opening later this fall of a two-story, 76,000-square-foot student union and multi-purpose building at EMCC's Golden Triangle campus will help alleviate growing pains at the college and provide additional classroom space. It is also expected to become a focal point for students looking to grab a bite to eat, visit with friends or prepare for their next class.
