Frequently Asked Questions

  • What Programs are offered at EMCC?
East Mississippi Community College offers both certificate and associate degree programs.  Associate of Arts degree programs are populated with courses according to the Mississippi Articulation and Transfer Tool (MATT).  For students pursuing a career/technical certificate or Associate of Applied Science degree, programs of study are offered based on the needs of the businesses and industries of the College’s six-county district.  As list of programs offered at EMCC can be found here.
  • How do I know if I’ve been accepted to EMCC?
EMCC has an open-admission policy. After applying for admission, you will receive a letter from the Admissions Office at the campus to which you applied. This letter will provide pertinent information about the completion of the admission process. Contact the campus Admissions Office to check on the status of your application and any additional items necessary to complete enrollment. Certain programs of study have requirements that must be met before being accepted into the program.

  • Will my academic classes at EMCC transfer to other colleges?
EMCC participates in the Articulation Agreement between Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning and the Mississippi Community College Board. This agreement has been adopted to ensure which courses at EMCC will transfer for credit toward a bachelor's degree at public universities throughout Mississippi. Visit this link to view the document: Articulation Agreement. Additionally, East Mississippi Community College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the associate's degree.

  • Are community college credits of the same quality as those earned at a university?
Yes, and probably better. Smaller classes allow more individual attention and interaction with your instructor. Accrediting standards for courses are the same for community colleges and universities. Community college instructors also concentrate more on teaching, rather than research. With a student/teacher ratio of 20:1, you will never feel like “just a number” at EMCC.

  • How large is EMCC?
Enrollment at East Mississippi Community College is more than 4,000 students district-wide. The Golden Triangle Campus, near Starkville, has an enrollment of more than 3,000. The Scooba Campus serves about 1,000 students and is the residential campus for the college. EMCC also has extension locations in Columbus-Lion Hills Center, West Point-Clay County Center, Macon, Columbus Air Force Base and Naval Air Station Meridian.

  • Other than being a student, are there ways for me to be involved at EMCC?
YES! EMCC offers a variety ways for students to be involved such as yearbook staff, Student Ambassadors, Cheerleading, Band, Choir, Beauty and Beau Pageant, Phi Theta Kappa, Student Government Association, Intercollegiate Sports and many more.
