Computer and System Requirements

To complete online classes, you will need this computer equipment and software. These are minimum recommendations; missing or faulty equipment and software may prevent adequate course access. Systems with higher specifications will probably enhance course performance. Off-campus computer hardware and internet access are the responsibility of the student. Students participating in online classes are welcome to EMCC campus computing facilities during the regular working hours, but you are highly discouraged from relying solely upon EMCC's computers.

For Technical requirements you need this:

  • IBM-compatible PC with a Pentium Processor with Windows 98, ME, XP, NT, or 2000
    or,
  • Macintosh with Mac 7.5 or above
  • 16 MB of RAM
  • 100 MB of free HD space
  • CD-ROM with sound card
  • 3.5" High-Density floppy disk drive or USB jump drive
  • 56 Kbps modem or higher
  • An Internet connection through an Internet Service Provider (You may need to update your web browser so that it is the most current version and run "Windows Update" on your computer)
  • Access to your Official College Email Account
  • Internet browser - Current version of Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer

Do I need any special software or plug-ins to take online courses?
You will need a current version of an Internet browser.

Software:

Some courses may require specific software programs. This is most commonly word processing software for writing courses and programming software for computer courses. Check with the instructor or distance learning coordinator before enrolling in the course.

Downloads

Each course is unique and will contain a variety of different media for activities or resources. This page will contain a source for you to find free plug-ins or tools you might need for your course.

If you are having problems with using Blackboard tools, try downloading the most recent browser for Internet access.

If you don't have any of the Microsoft products below, and you need to view and print a file placed in Blackboard, download the appropriate viewer.
