Will Online Classes Work for Me?

EMCC wants your online class experiences to be successful. Before registering for an online class, you should understand the differences and similarities between the online class and the traditional classroom classes. Online classes require that you cope with three areas; please take a moment to consider these issues.

Computers:

  • Do you have daily access to a working computer with modem?
  • Do you have a reliable internet provider?
  • Are you comfortable using email, and do you have a personal email address?
  • Are you comfortable with a word processing program (and perhaps any program specific to the class)?
  • Can you cut and paste between documents?
  • Can you post attachments to emails?
  • Are you comfortable using a web browser and the internet?

Resources:

  • Will you be able to promptly purchase the textbooks required for the course?
  • Will you have time for the class? (Online classes include time online and offline).
  • Can you meet and follow a schedule with deadlines?
  • Depending on the course, you may still need to meet at EMCC or your host campus for a proctored assignment or exam. Will you be able to make and keep an appointment? Some classes, such as oral communication and some science classes, may require that you meet with the instructor on campus.

Skills:

  • Are you comfortable with independent work?
  • Will you contact the instructor when questions arise in the course?
  • Will you contact other college personnel for help with your computer and library problems?
  • Have you experienced difficulty with other courses in this field? If you were not successful in taking this class in the traditional classroom, you may continue having problems.
  • Can you learn independently from a textbook and notes?
  • Can you read and follow directions for assignments and notes?
