Release date: March 25, 2014

SCOOBA – East Mississippi Community College will put the “fun” back in fund-raising next week at the school’s 3rd Annual Relay for Life.

The annual walk-a-thon will be Tuesday, April 1, from 4:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Sullivan-Windham Field. The public is invited out to the Scooba campus to help students and volunteers raise $10,000 for cancer research with a variety of family-friendly games and activities.

Booths hosted by campus organizations and teams include a photo booth – complete with prop clothing – sponsored by the Student Ambassadors and Student Government Association, the women’s basketball team’s shoot-out, the rodeo team’s lasso competition and the business office’s dunking booth among others. Student Services will be selling turns in a money booth where dollar bills are blown around and participants try to grab as much money as possible.

“Relay for Life is built around a serious goal, and we’re committed to raising $10,000 for cancer research, but we want everyone there to have as much fun as possible while we work toward that goal,” said Kate McCarty, EMCC event coordinator.

McCarty said the event’s theme, “Step Right Up for a Cure!,” reflects the carnival atmosphere EMCC hopes to create as it raises money for a worthy cause. As the first Mississippi community college to host a Relay for Life event on its campus, she said EMCC is constantly looking for new ways to make the event as enjoyable as it is worthwhile.

The traditional opening lap made by cancer survivors is scheduled for 5:15 p.m.
