Strong auditions by three East Mississippi Community College band members earned them a trip to Hattiesburg for the MJCCBA Intercollegiate Band Clinic and Conference. At the conference, three days of clinics and rehearsal culminated in a concert Feb. 8 at the University of Southern Mississippi performed by community college students from all over the state.
The students who represented EMCC were, from left: Marilyn Kelly of Pachuta, 4th chair MJCCAB Intercollegiate Band Flute; Lauren Stephens of Meridian, 2nd chair MJCCAB Intercollegiate Band Clarinet; and Krista Greenwood of Carthage, 1st chair MJCCAB Intercollegiate Band Baritone Saxophone.
Stephen Stringer, director of the Mighty Lion Band, said students like these are an important part of the success of EMCC’s band program: “All three of these students are taking advantage of the scholarship opportunities here at EMCC and are leaders among our students. They auditioned against some of the best JUCO band students in the state. This was another great opportunity for EMCC to be represented at the state level.”
