Randy Rigdon, who represents Kemper County on the East Mississippi Community College Board of Trustees, during a Sept. 15 tour of the college’s campuses. The day-long tour for Kemper County officials started in the morning with coffee at the Scooba campus before EMCC staffers and their guests boarded a van and made the 50-mile trip to the Golden Triangle campus. Assistant men's basketball coach Jeremy Shulman lifts weights at the newly completed weight training room at the Scooba campus -- part of a large-scale renovation of the Student Activities Building across from Sullivan-Windham Field. The project also includes offices for football coaches, a classroom and meeting room, larger dressing rooms and a student wellness center.

ALUM DEDRA ROBY SHOWS OFF HER KITCHEN Dedra Roby of Corporate Dining Concepts is chef manager of SeverCorr’s kitchen and a 2005 graduate of East Mississippi Community College’s Hotel and Restaurant Management program. Cooking runs in Dedra’s family. She got her start at Sweetie’s Bake Shop in Columbus, which her mother owned for a number of years. She worked at Backyard Burgers and The Grill before landing her present job at SeverCorr, where she supervises the preparation of meals for more than 300 people a day. Customer favorites? Dedra said they love meatloaf, taco salad, fried chicken and “Catfish Fridays.” She took time out recently to host a tour of SeverCorr's kitchen for current Hotel and Restaurant Management students from EMCC.
More about SeverCorr: EMCC partners with 78 businesses, training and re-training employees – including SeverCorr, a “next generation” steel plant near Columbus. The plant is currently turning out regular and automotive grade steel in 45,000-pound coils and also manufactures stainless steel. Company officials recently announced the beginning of Phase 3 of the facility’s construction ... ahead of schedule. SeverCorr is the recipient of EMCC's Director's Award, presented in April at the college's annual Industry Appreciation Luncheon.
