East Mississippi Community College alumni and friends gathered June 26 at Ralph Morgan’s country retreat in Lauderdale County. It was the first stop in EMCC’s “Step Toward Excellence Road Show.” The evening began with a social hour as attendees like Paul Green, pictured, signed up for a chance to win a print by EMCC alum Arch Pitts. A barbecue supper was next as alumni heard updates from:

  • Dr. Rick Young, EMCC president
  • Nick Clark, EMCC director of Development and Alumni Affairs
  • Buddy Stephens, who became EMCC’s head football coach in December. Before joining the EMCC family, Stephens helped lead Pearl River Community College to four consecutive state titles and one national title.
  • Tony Montgomery, head baseball coach, whose team finished the 2007-08 season with a 29-18 record, just one win shy of the playoffs.
  • Kate Neely, recently named head softball coach. The Lady Lions will open the 2008-09 season in a newly completed softball complex.
  • Mark White, head men’s basketball coach. White comes to EMCC from Mississippi State University, where he was an assistant basketball coach for five years under Rick Stansbury.
  • Sharon Thompson, head women’s basketball coach, whose team played this year in the state tournament.
  • Junior Noel, head men’s soccer coach in 2007-08, will lead both the men’s and women’s programs in the coming season.

The next stop on the “Step Toward Excellence Road Show” will be July 31 at EMCC’s Golden Triangle campus. For more information, call Nick Clark at (662) 476-5075 or (662) 251-8224
